Plugin timeout vs Valid Error

Hi all,
In my Nagios system I seem to get quite a few Plugin timeouts. I have
Nagios running on a Alpha box with Debian, in a mainly Windows (i.e.
everything else) environment using NSClient to get all info except Host
pings.

In some cases I get a Plugin timeout (e.g. CRITICAL - Plugin timed out
after 10 seconds ) and other cases I get a valid error (e.g. PING CRITICAL
- Packet loss = 100% ).
With the check_nt plugin I get the warning (e.g. MEMUSE;WARNING;SOFT;1;No
data was recieved from host! [sic] ) vs the error (e.g.
PROC_DOMINO;CRITICAL;SOFT;5; nserver.exe: not running - nrouter.exe: not
running )

The problem is that I would like to treat these two cases slightly
differently. In the first case I'd like to keep trying for e.g. half an
hour before reporting a problem, but the second case should be reported
almost immediately.
In the Plugin timeout case, I often get the same critical problem for
minutes at a time, so I'd take from this that increasing the service
timeout wouldn't help too much.

Is there any way to accomplish this?

Thanks

Darren.
