NRPE failure

Ok I had this happen before but after a reboot it went away and never came
back. When I run check_nrpe I get the following: 

-bash-2.05b$ ./check_nrpe -H 172.16.4.206 -p 5666                   
NRPE v1.8

-bash-2.05b$ ./check_nrpe -H 172.16.4.206 -p 5666 -c check_disk
ÿ¾èXÿ# 


I can't figure out why I get "ÿ¾èXÿ#" back as a result. Does not matter what
command I run or what server I connect to, it always comes back ÿ¾èXÿ#. It
did work before. I have NRPE debugging on and the log shows nothing. Any
ideas? This is NRPE 1.8 on both host/server. I have tired to recompile
check_nrpe and that did nothing.
