Distributed host checks / service checks

Hey,

Were running a mixed passive / active check environment. Active checking
is currently done to all the upstream systems we look after that are not
firewalled. The rest of the network (almost 100 systems) is all done via
passive checking (NSCA). And it all works wonderfully!

However I have not been able to find a good way of host checking. I have
seen suggestions of using NRPE (which is currently used on the
unfirewalled network) however we cannot do this for a couple of reasons...
So is there anyway that we can perform a host check with passive checking?
(There is a mention of it in the docs however it doesnt go on any lengths
about it).

If this is simply too hard, we can base the status of the host on the
services (ie if all the services on a host are down then the machine must
be down). So how can we change the host status based on a service?
Say if HTTP service is reported to be CRITICAL how can we change the 'host
status' to reflect this? This would also allow us to us the status map.

Thanks,
Dan.
