Nagios is not running?

All of a sudden, sometime around 10am EST time, my Nagios box started
reporting that it's not running anymore.

Running from the command line:
[root at mnmslx11 var]# ../libexec/check_nagios -F
/usr/local/nagios/var/status.log -e 120 -C /usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios
Could not locate a running Nagios process!

[root at mnmslx11 var]# ps -aux | grep -c nagios
186

In the commands.cfg file I have:
# 'check_nagios' command definition
define command{
        command_name    check_nagios
        command_line    $USER1$/check_nagios -F
/usr/local/nagios/var/status.log -e 120 -C /usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios
        }

In the lock file, it's process ID 20652
ps -ef | grep nagios
nagios   20652     1  0 10:32 ?        00:00:03
/usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -d

On the Process Info page I have:
Program Start Time: 09-30-2002 10:32:44 
Total Running Time: 0d 0h 23m 43s 
Last External Command Check: 09-30-2002 10:56:13 
Last Log File Rotation: N/A 
Nagios PID 20652 

I'm really confused!!! Please help!
