I don't know if I can help with the problem, but It would be much easier
to get a response if you would include some minimal information.

OS version
Nagios version
maybe the install configure switches or if it is an rpm install
maybe some configuration samples

Are you sure you're not having a network issue that is actually causing
the service to be unreachable.  I experienced a problem with a router
last week that made it appear that something was wrong with some
servers, but it was just caused by the router causing packet loss and
slow responses.
