Process may not be running (Nagios 1.0b5)

Every now and again I notice that nagios says that the nagios process may be
down. (Under process info it says that the status file hasn't been updated
for 3000+ seconds). The nagios process is running and if I leave it for
about 5-10mins it starts woring fine again (until the next time it thinks
it's not running)

It's running on FreeBSD-4-stable.. Any ideas whats wrong? or should I just
up the check_nagios time really high?
