Well, I've been able to narrow down my error by
looking at the apache error logs.  Here's what apache
is saying when I click on the statusmap hyperlink:

ld.so.1: statusmap.cgi: fatal: libpng12.so.0: open
failed: No such file or directory

/usr/local/nagios/sbin/statusmap.cgi

/usr/local/nagios/sbin/statusmap.cgi

libpng12.s0.0 is in /usr/local/lib and /usr/local/lib
is in my LD_LIBRARY_PATH, but yet the statusmap.cgi
binary is created.  Why do I get a statusmap.cgi
binary created even though this library seems to be
missing.  What gives?  I'm not a software engineer :-(
