Origin of "nagios"

Okay, here is a question:

Where does the word "nagios" come from? One of my co-workers wondered if it 
was vaguely Greek (anyone know any vague Greeks? (or is the greecians?))

This is obviously another question of deep and meaningful purpose that 
should go in the FAQ :)
