Install issue

Look in the /etc/group file, which is the group defined with the id 0.
it looks like under freeBSD, such group is "wheel" and not "root", so
just modify the Makefile to do: 
/usr/bin/install -c -m 755 -d -o root -g wheel /usr/local/etc/rc.d

if wheel is the good group id, verify it.
