Confusing documentation about the defauilt format for hosts.cfg

I have just installed nagios 1.06b and am confused about one thing.
According to the documentation the default for the hosts.cfg file is the
old style. However, make install-config creates config files that are
based on the template style. So, my questions are which format really is
the default and do you still need to specify -with-template-objects when
you run configure?
