Retaining data after nagios system integration

Greetings,

I need to integrate a legacy netsaint monitoring host
into my distributed nagios setup.

I can simply copy the appropriate host/service/hostgroup/etc
entries to the appropriate config files on the distributed
and central servers, however I need to maintain the existing
availability data.

How can I easily do this ? Can I simply do the following to 
the appropriate nagios.log files :

cat nagios-host1.log nagios-host2.log | sort -u > nagios.log
