What program are you piping your text into?

The | "'nagios-users at lists.sourceforge.net'"  command needs to contain an
executable.

Maybe try | sendmail marcus.nilsson at cannondale.com

or | mail -s "Host DOWN alert for Oldenzaal01!"
marcus.nilsson at cannondale.com"

This is probably very easy and I am quite novel on Linux so bare with me.

This is what I get in /usr/local/nagios/var/nagios.log:

[1033453141] Warning: Attempting to execute the command "/usr/bin/printf

-s "Host DOWN alert for Oldenzaal01!" marcus.nilsson at cannondale.com"
resulted in a return code of 127.  Make sure the script or binary you are
trying to execute actually exists...

nilssonm;Oldenzaal01;DOWN;host-notify-by-email;CRITICAL - Plugin timed out
after 10 seconds

Do I need sendmail installed to get the notify-by-email function to work?

The box is running Linux Slackware 8.1
