You should first let a try to the command "man ping" to get the manpage
of ping command.

On my LiNUX RedHat 7.3, I've got :

PING(8) System Manager's Manual: iputils PING(8)

NAME
ping, ping6 - send ICMP ECHO_REQUEST to network hosts

SYNOPSIS
       ping [ -LRUbdfnqrvVaA] [ -c count] [ -i interval] [ -l
       preload] [ -p pattern] [ -s packetsize] [ -t ttl] [ -w
       deadline] [ -F flowlabel] [ -I interface] [ -M hint] [
       -Q tos] [ -S sndbuf] [ -T timestamp option] [ hop ...]
       destination

So the -s option should be helpfull, you just have to add this option to
your nagios/etc/checkcommands.cfg file.

Still wondering if there is a way to increase the packet size in the
    check_ping plugin.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
