Phantom service checks

I put some hosts into a hostgroup associated with some services and
subsequently removed them. Unfortunately the services are still associated
with those hosts and it's still trying to check them. I've deleted
status.log and status.sav, is there some other place where Nagios
"remembers" this sort of thing?

The hosts are not in any way associated with the services in the config
files.
