obvious question, but you have installed the nagios plugins, havent you?
They do not come as part of the standard nagios install, you have to do that
seperately...

Subject: [Nagios-users] problem starting nagios

> Hello,
>
> I seem to be having a problem starting nagios. It all has to do with the
status.log file. Everytime I start nagios it cannot find any hosts/services
due to the fact that it did not create a status.log file. While nagios is
running in the background, I did a "touch status.log" as well as "chown
nagios:nagios status.log" and "chmod 644 status.log" then I did a
"kill -HUP nagios.pid" It then proceeded to change status.log to
status.sav. The contents of the file are as follows:
>
> # Nagios 1.0b6 Retention File
> CREATED: 1037290939
> PROGRAM: 1;1;1;1;0;0;1;0
> HOST: FS1;1;1037289573;1;10;3158;0;1037287387;1;1;1;0;1;1;1;1037287387;(No
output!)
> SERVICE:
FS1;Ping;2;1037289573;0;0;0;0;3158;0;0;1;1;1;1;0;1;1;1;1;1037287387;(Return
code of 127 is out of bounds - plugin may be missing)

and it says that everything is running fine. This is the only error message
that I have found to show up. The nagios service starts just fine. Would
anyone happen to know exactly why this would be happening? Thanks!
