missing nagios.lock file

When I try to start the init script. I get a 
"no lock file found in /usr/local/nagios/var/nagios.lock" error because
there is no nagios.lock file in this directory.

I'm assuming that somwhere in the installation process, this file
should have been placed in /var, but it was not.

Why am I missing this file and what can I do to get rid of this error.
