check_ifstatus.pl - returns unkn

When running check_ifstatus.pl, the service gets set to CRITICAL, and I
see the following in nagios:

"(Return code of 126 is out of bounds - plugin may be missing)"

Nagios can execute the plugin.

my /etc/checkcommands.cfg

# 'check_ifstatus' command definition
define command{
        command_name    check_ifstatus
        command_line    /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_ifstatus.pl -c
COMMUNITY $HOSTADDRESS$
        }

I can run the plugin directly from the shell, and when i do I get the
following:

"OK: host 'ip address', interfaces up: 5, down: 0, dormant: 0

Any ideas?
