NRPE returns OK, then "NRPE: Unable to read output"

When you use check_ping with nrpe, we get the status "OK" and nrpe gives "Unable to read output"
I would nrpe expect to return a "critical" or at least an "unknown" mode when this happens.

Is this a bug in nrpe?

check_ping (nagios-plugins 1.4.5) 1.52
NRPE - Nagios Remote Plugin Executor Version: 2.10
