Hmm. It works here, with patch -p1 < file (patch --version 2.5.4). What
version of patch are you using?

git-apply works without a git repo otherwise. If you add --verbose to
it the output is fairly similar to that of patch. Use --whitespace=strip
to get rid of trailing spaces in patches.
