NRPE 1.8 problem: output returns "ÿ¾çÿ#"

Wierd problem this. Unfortunately, beyond my skills to find a fix!

If I run nrpe on a SunOS 5.8 server with check_write_to_null defined as a
shell script that does this:

#!/usr/bin/ksh
print -u2 "$0"

The idea is a plugin that writes to stdout with nothing to stdin (I actually
get this problem if the #! program doesn't exist because perl is not
installed).

If I then run check_nrpe -H host -c check_write_to_null, I get "ÿ¾çÿ#".

If nrpe is run on a SunOS 5.6 server, I get "NRPE: Unable to read output" as
expected. I think the problem starts in my_system(), but I don't understand
why.

This is on NRPE 1.8.

Anyone got any ideas?

Ton
